Chapel of the Chimes-Andrews

Martha West Andrews ~ January 12, 1942 ~ March 8, 2004.
RIP

Located at Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward, California. I took this photo October 27, 2008 when I was visiting my relatives who have their final resting places in this cemetery. I have relatives of relatives interred here and a high school classmate. As I am thinking of this and remember the classmate, I realize I haven't been to her place of rest in a very long, long time. I will put that on my agenda the next time I am there visiting.

First Permanent Newspaper Publisher of Hayward

In the 19010 Federal Census George "A." Oakes and his wife, Emma are both listed as publishers of a newspaper. If you look closely at this monument, you will see that it states George was the "First Permanent Newspaper Publisher of Hayward."

His family was listed as living in Eden Township, specifically on A Street. George and Emma had three children, George "H.", Nelda and Helen. George "H." was listed in this census as being 21 years of age and a printer in a newspaper office. George "A." and the rest of his family were all born in California.

George "Henry" Oakes founded the Alvarado Pioneer in 1925, his son George "P." published this until 1946 and then it was merged with the Township Register which later became The Argus.

George "A." Oakes was born Jan. 7, 1856 and died October 9, 1925. His monument and place of rest is in Lonetree Cemetery in Hayward.

Second Blogiversary & My Mother's Birthday

I was hoping to have so much more time this past year to post to this blog, but it seems I was kept busier than I expected. Today is the two year anniversary for this blog. It is also my mother's birthday, may she rest in peace. She would have been 74 today. Instead, she passed away when she was only 64 years old. The anniversary of her death is in January, which will be 10 years. Instead of celebrating this blog, I would prefer to celebrate my mother's short life. Cancer was her demon. So, mom (Annette Neva Fleming) I am here today to let you know you are never forgotten. We miss you and love you. Happy Birthday!

My goal for the upcoming year is to post more than I did this past year. I hope you enjoy the posts that are here so far on this blog, and please get ready to see more! Now, onward into the third year!

Alameda County One Hundred Club ~ Post #1

This monument stands in Hayward's Lone Tree Cemetery. It was erected in 2008 and holds memory to the county's fallen heroes. You can find the memorial in the newer section of the cemetery towards the back.
The center panel boasts the logo for the 100 club and says:

Alameda County 100 Club
Founded in 1974 by Martin C. Kauffman
This Memorial Is Dedicated To The
Families Of Peace Officers
And Firefighters Who
Gave Their Lives Protecting The
Citizens Of Alameda County

Below this is the California and United States Flags along
with the police officer and firefighter logos.
On the left is this beautiful poem written by George Hahn, a retired Sargent
from the LA Police Department:

I never dreamed it would be me,
My name for all eternity,
Recorded here at this hallowed place,
Alas, my name, no more face.

"In the line of duty" I hear them say;
My family now the price will pay,
My folded flag stained with their tears;
We only had those few short years.

The badge no longer on my chest,
I sleep now in eternal rest;
My sword I pass to those behind,
And pray they keep this thought in mind;

I never dreamed it would be me,
And with heavy heart and bended knee;
I ask for all here from the past,
Dear God let my name be the last.

The right panel lists the fallen officers and firefighters starting in 1973.
I will share each of these names with you in my following post.

Across the bottom of the memorial states:

Honoring and remembering all peace officers and firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Holy Sepulchre Cemetery

This catholic cemetery is located on Mission Blvd. in Hayward. From what I have read I understand the cemetery began in 1913 and as of a year ago entails about three thousand graves.

This is the entrance of the cemetery. It is quite nice, as cemetery entrances go. Not being catholic myself, I had never been inside this cemetery. For some reason I almost felt as if I wasn't suppose to be on these grounds. I am not sure why I felt this way.

The cemetery is probably the most organized looking cemetery I believe I have ever been in. The grounds were nicely kept and the headstones were lined up in rows so perfectly everywhere you looked. I felt such a sense of perfection. Maybe that is one of the reasons I felt I wasn't suppose to be on the grounds. Maybe because it was a catholic cemetery and it looked so perfect?

I took the above picture as I admired the difference in this memorial. There is a surname, but I don't remember finding dates or any other information. There are a few memorials like this one throughout the cemetery.

Here is a picture of the mausoleum. This is such a beautiful building. Next time I visit this cemetery maybe I will feel comfortable enough to actually going inside. I spent about an hour on the grounds and felt more comfortable the longer I was there. And, as usual, the more I explored the more I wanted to explore!

In the future I will share more pictures and a story or two of some of the more prominent people buried here. For now I wanted to introduce the cemetery to you and give you a flavor of age, beauty and perfection.

Don't Believe It Was Named After This Tree

This was a beautiful view inside the Lone Tree Cemetery, in Hayward. I could have taken a better picture,it really isn't very straight, however I think you can get the jest of it. This large tree on the hill, I don't believe this is the tree I spoke of in my previous post. The tree I spoke of is the tree the cemetery was named after. I have seen a picture of the tree, and it doesn't look anything like the beautiful one on the hill here. I would need to speak with someone at the cemetery to find out which tree is "THE TREE." I will work on that for a future post.
